Hi Guys...

Where do you guys get your oil for your 2-stroke engines in town?

I've been to a couple of auto parts stores around and I haven't seen any of the oils recommended by DA for break-in and operation of their engines.

For break in:
Lawnboy ashless or
Penzoil 2-cycle air cooled.

Operation:
Amsoil Synthetic etc.

Being a new expensive engine, I'd PREFER to stick with the manufacturers recommendation... if I can find 'em. Anyone else have substitutions?

Hi Tom

As long as you get a quality low ash or ashless oil for break in. I used penzoil which I purchased at the penzoil shop on Eagleson Rd just south of Hazeldean. On my ZDZ 80s after break in I've been useing the Honda HP2 syntheic oil at 50to1. I.ve recently required a DA 100 which was broken in on CTC low ash then after break in switched to the Honda oil and have no problems.

Oh... is that the Frisby tire that's at the bottom of the Hill beneath Hazeldean Mall? Never thought to look there... I didn't realize they were a Penzoil dealer.

So... does this mean that the mix ratio is more a function of the oil than of the engine? So Honda HP2 would be 50:1 while Amsoil would be 80:1?

Whereabouts on Merivale is that? Is it near any big box stores I might know?

Thanks,

the Penzoil is further south on Eagleson it behind the Sunoco Gas Bar.

The Amsoil synthetic has 2 products a 100 to 1 and a 50 to 1. The oils are designed for that mixture. So you wouldn't take the 100 to 1 oil and and mix it to a 50 to 1. Where as the Honda oil I use the recomend it to be mixed at 32to1 or 50 to 1.

Ahh! Synthetic

The answer to your question is yes the mix ratio is a function of the oil but remember the quality of the engine components plays an important factor here also, because of the synthetic structures and additives and the testings they do with the synthetics, until the failing point is determined.(with high quality components of course right?) Then they back it off a bit if you know what I mean to come up with their equation (100:1, 50:1 etc) for reliable use. This is my 2 pennies worth anyway.

I remember when synthetics started coming on the market and everybody thought it was too expensive and didnt believe it would work because they thought their motors would fail. (darn sceptics).
Well I tried it in the early 80s in my brand new $400 weedwhacker just to see if it would blow up or not. I cant remember the brand I was using but it was probably Amsoil (very expensive back then!).Everybody thought I was crazy, wasting my time and money.

Guess what, I was mixing 100:1 (this was totally unheard of at the time) and I still am today with the same 24 year old whacker that has been tried and tested to the limits over and over again. It literally has hundreds of hours on it ! My 24cc Mitsubishi motor runs just as well now as it did when it was new and starts third pull every time. You get hardly any smoke and higher RPMs because it burns so clean. So is the oil to expensive or are we to sceptical or cheap ? In the long run I think its worth it!!

One time I mixed 150:1 in an old 70cc air cooled 2 stroke dirt bike I had in 30+C weather and went wide open (about ten minutes)just so I could take the motor apart after I sqeaked it :D to see exactly WHAT failed inside . It wasnt the bearings, just the piston(hole in it) and a scorched head (polished it up a bit).I bored it oversize broke it back in properly(100:1) and that engine still runs today!(I dont own it anymore though) So you can imagine what synthetics do for 4 strokes.

I highly recommend synthetics just from personal use and a few of my own tests in the past. Oh the sound of a sqeaking motor, such fun ! :D

No Tom, I havent converted to electric yet but if you could set me up with a good deal or recommend an easy fligher (still learning) with a Lipo power setup I might consider the transition over just to see what its like on the quiet side. I will still allways like the noise of gas power though. The squeak only hurts your wallet not your mind !

I guess I should have posted this under Chat, Oh Well.

Fly on !

Tom, one other option is Klotz, sold at Discount Hobbies and at one of the local bike shops. Perhaps Good time centre or Moto Sports World,...

I found Amsoil.

On the Amsoil website, you can search for distributors. Punching in my postal code resulted in a guy in Glen Cairn that sells Amsoil out of his house (he's retired).

He only had the small bottles of Amsoil Sabre Pro 100:1 in stock but he can get the 1qt bottles if you ask him ahead of time (sounds like he just happened to be out). I picked up two 103mL bottles for $5. It doesn't sound like much until you realize that at 100:1 this is good for almost 5 gallons.

The Penzoil "10minute oil change" store behind the Sunoco on Eagleson didn't have 2-cycle oil. Hmmm. I'll have to continue looking for that. I'll browse around the lawn/garden sections of hardware stores. Perhaps next time I'm on merivale I'll check out that Pennzoil store.

Hi Tom , There are many threads on RCU that deal with 2 cycle oil , and would suggest going through them !
I've used Klotz over the years and it Carbon's up in side most engines(except Zenoahs ) that I've used it in .
I was running Amsoill 50:1 last summer in my ZDZ 80 and had a cylinder liner fail ,Not sure it was directly related , but why take chances! ( See threads on RCU ) I have since switched to Belray MC-1 at 40:1( See threads on RCU ) and have been very happy with it. Its availible at the Off road Bike \ 4 wheeler shop on Moodie near Richmond rd. Just some personal experiances and observations

Ha.... and I thought the DA vs. ZDZ vs. 3W debates were bad.

After reading through some of the oil debates on RCU it seems like people get even more emotional about what they put IN their engines than what stamp is engraved ON the engine. It's probably just cause now they can argue Brand Name AND mix ratio :) :P

You can also order Amsoil throught www.royaldistributing.com My son gets all of his snowmobile stuff from them and it usually shows up in 2 days. The 236 ml bottle is 4.95 and 946 ml is 11.95. Both prices are in Canadian funds and they are located in Guelph, Barrie and Sudbury.

I got 2 pints of Amsoil Sabre Pro from the fellow who distributes for them in Glen Cairn. The two bottles came to $27.03 when I picked it up at his door on my way to the field. I phoned him early one week, and the oil was in the following week. Luckily it's something that you know when you're running out, so the lead time doesn't really bother me.

That should be good for 200L of gas... or about 52 gallons... I *HOPE* that'll do me till next year.

I never did find the Pennzoil Air Cooled anywhere. Ended up doing the Briggs and Stratton oil from Home Hardware... the label said, 2 cycle, air cooled, smokeless, so I figured it'd be OK... My engine seems to be running fine... so Q.E.D...

Dave Penchuk since mentioned that the gas station in Richmond has Penzoil Air Cooled. A little late for me... but good to know in any case.

I've now been using Amsoil mixed at 100:1 for about 4 gallons in my DA-50, and it seems to be working fine. Since the last time I touched the needles (a month ago), the engine has always taken no less than 6 and no more than 8 flips to start after choke-ing. When it's first flight of the day, it's always the 6th flip. If it's still hot from the last flight, it starts on the first flip. It's only when it's been sitting for a little while and needs rechoke-ing its been between 6 and 8 flips.

I'm feeling really spoiled by this engine... it's letting me focus on flying, and not tinkering :)
