In an effort to get my post count up (post count = self worth), I thought I'd follow SoClarke's lead and post some video.

After looking through the substantial collection I have saved on my computer (and I wonder why my Hard drive is so full), I decided on this one... in honour of a certain movie that's opening tomorrow.

For your consideration:

How do YOU spell redneck??

F-L-Y-I-N-G--G-E-N-E-R-A-L--L-E-E

Funny vid though. Get one of those and the flying boat. Put the boat on a trailer behind the car, Variable pitch prop on the car so you could back the trailer into the water and launch the boat................I'm thinking about this waaaayyy to much, gotta run

Next installment.

Nice video of Mice McConville tossing an Extra 260 around.

I like the one roll circle.

Very cool vid. One-Roll circle very cool but, what about the knife-edge square loop? Straight down then lots-o-rudder and fly out knife-edge!! Yikes.. ..Gotta have nerves of steel when doing the last portion. Actually something else made of steel but, for fear of the censor board I'll leave it at "nerves":)

This weeks:

From this and last weeks vids, I guess you can tell that I like large scale aircraft aerobatics. (Maybe someday I'll stockpile enough change to get one)

This one came from a site where I downloaded the 2004 Don Lowe Masters event. I especially liked Peter Goldsmith's routine with his CAP 232 (I think if I remember correctly, it's 50% scale).

Here's what I like about this video:
-choice of music.... not the techno "Unchained Melody" that everyone uses.
-choreography, and timing maneuvers to the music
-he doesn't spend the whole flight hovering and doing rolling harriers.
-the rolling circle with an outside snap for each little flourish in the music.
-the wall-into-inverted elevator finale at about 4:00.

Anyways, hope I'm not boring anyone.

Have fun,

Not boring me at all.

I can never find the time to find these GEMS.

Whenever I look for movies all I get is Porn and after 12 hours of sorting that out who has time for airplane movies LOL.

Thanks Tom

Fred ... 12 hours straight of porn !!!

Lucky guy :D

Besides, after 12 straight hours, who the hell wants to look at silly airplane videos?

Wow...12 hours... the mind boggles.... *shudder*

Anyways... here's this weeks' installment. It happens to be the Showtime 4D, which I also just HAPPPEN to know Dave Rees plans to maiden tomorrow morning.

The interesting design aspect about this one is the Side Force Generators (SFGs) on the wings. Apparently give the plane extremely good knife edge performance... almost "tensor-like" one might say.

This one is flown by Kyle Woyshnis... a name you'll recognize if you frequent the Flying Cirkus forums.

http://www.engsoc.org/~thastie/Kyleshowtime_smaller.wmv

Note how slow and low the rolling harriers are, and how much knife edge flight can be slowed down. You hafta start thinking of your rudder as an elevator that works side to side (it has almost the same control authority). Yes... that left thumb DOES have a purpose once you're off the ground... go figure, eh?

There... now that we all know what the airplane is capable of, I want everyone to start asking Dave Rees next time they see him: "Dave, why doesn't your Showtime fly like the one in the video?"

Dave: I'm doin' this for your own good.... we all progress faster when we have an educated peanut gallery watching.

Happy viewing.

Besides, he bought a plane called "showtime". Ya sorta set a certain expectation of entertainment with a name like that.:D

Dave Rees

Thanks Tom,

First off, awesome vid. Kyle is a fantastic flyer, I've seen several vids of him flying and I believe he is out to prove that gravity is just a rumour:) His low rolling harrier is something to see for sure.

If anyone wants to see me fly like that............get in line, right behind me!!:p

Corey, I agree, the name just sounds a bit "cocky" for my liking. Therefore I pulled all the "Showtime" stickers off before assembly.

Got 6 flights on it today and it flies great!! A lot "groovier" than the FT90 which suits me just fine. High altitude hovering seemed to require a bit less work, harrier doesn't seem to rock as much and knife edge with speed didn't need much rudder and slow it down add more rudder and it settles into a nice high-alpha knife edge. It could be that I just got lucky.:D All flights today were done without the SFG's on. Will try them soon. Unfortunately after my last flight of the day I discovered that at some point I lost my muffler and header:( Won't get to fly until I get a replacement. (please see the "For-sale or but" thread)

Cheers,
Dave

Hey, I couldn't open the link!!! ...Maybe Dave has interfered with this so that we can't see how this model is supposed to be flown! ;)

BTW, I was there for the maiden flight. Dave did a great job of maneuvering this highly aerobatic model in a brutal crosswind...

I still want to see how this thing is supposed to fly...

There are two things we should remember while flying. You should remember these things ESPECIALLY if you're flying a 46% Hangar 9 Ultimate costing $2000CDN (just for the airframe).

Firstly, make sure your prop-nuts are tight:
http://www.engsoc.org/~thastie/Tight%20Prop.wmv

Secondly, ensure that sufficient gas is on board for the planned flight:
http://www.engsoc.org/~thastie/No%20Gas.MPG

I guess you should also make sure you have your receiver batteries charged, but I didn't have a video demonstrating that one.

Have fun,
Tom

Here's this weeks' installment:

Some of you may remember a couple months back when the cover of MAAC magazine was a big red 8 engined aircraft. That happened to be a 64" Antonov ANT-20 "Maxim Gorky". Basically a huge Russian Propaganda aircraft built in 1931 to promote the great Stalin to the proletariat. That model was built by a fellow from Kamloops named Martin Hunter. He's quite the legend on rcgroups.com for his prowess with iron on covering... but I digress.

He decided to double size his earlier ANT-20 and build in in 1/20th scale. That may sound small until you realize that 1/20th scale for this aircraft is actually 126" wingspan

Anyways... he's just completed the new Maxim Gorky, and has been flying it. Maiden flight video is here:
http://www.dreamer.rchomepage.com/ant20testshort.wmv
and
http://www.dreamer.rchomepage.com/ant20testshortlow.wmv

The build thread from the start is here:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=370403

I love the sound of the 8 CD rom motors on this plane. One of the latest Castle Creation loads causes a pretty loud growl with some motors (due to an overheating problem on high-wind outrunners) That's what makes the plane so noisy...

BTW... apparently the final weight was about 7lbs. Not half bad for a 10ft wingspan.

Enjoy
Tom

Well... sorry I missed last week guys... Dave and I were at NEAT Fair. Once of the weird and wonderful types of aircraft there were these flying wings which I’d describe as zagi’s on steroids. There’s actually a thread started on Rcgroups discussing whether these wings should be allowed to fly with the rest of the electric aircraft at the fair because of the speed difference between them and the rest of us. One of the wing pilots posted this brief video of some of the low passes and the rolling circles these wings would do… apparently this is just a teaser of the more video to come:

www.chuckandjenna.com/soup/Movie1.wmv

Now Dave will confirm that this video doesn’t do justice to the 20kHz ear-piercing shriek that these wings put out. At one point I think there were 4 of them in the air at once, and the sound must’ve driven dogs nuts for miles. I was flying at the same time as they were a couple times, and it definitely increased the adrenaline level a little… the only plus side being you could always hear where they were.

Dave and I also took lots of video and pictures of the event. All I can say is be sure not to miss the next ORCC club meeting night.

Cheers,
Tom

It hasn't quite been a week yet, I know, but I found this and had to share it.

A couple of Steven's Aero guys having some fun with his trainer... The Squirt 400.

I saw him do one of these helicopter landings with it at NEAT. It got quite the reaction from the crowd.

Lets see you do that with a NextStar....
hmmm... *thinks*...
Does anyone have a NextStar they'd let me try this with?

I "WMVed" Dave's movie from the meeting on Tuesday night. It stands at 80 megs right now. I'm not sure what the best trade-off between file size and quality is yet, so I err'ed on the side of quality.

You can download it here:
www.engsoc.org/~thastie/NEAT_recap.wmv

For those of you who weren't at the meeting, this is Dave's excellent editing job of the video we took down at NEAT fair last month. It gives a good overview of the types of electric aircraft that were down there.

Note... I had to delete some of my other videos from my webspace to make room for this one... so some of the older links in this thread may no longer work.

Actually, I also posted a link to the NEAT video on the RCGROUPS.com forum where they have an area dedicated to NEAT. Lots of compliments on the video... :D :D

This week I'd like to direct your attention to the Flying Cirkus "Circus Style Video Contest". Basically a member voted video contest, where they're looking for entertaining videos that show people having fun doing 3D flying.

Here's the electric category winner. He's got some great special effects in there:
http://vids.flyingcirkus.com/vids6/2005csvc/VELA-2005FCVC_VELA_FINAL.wmv

I also enjoyed the glow category winner.... very original idea:
http://vids.flyingcirkus.com/vids6/2005csvc/zivbit-fc_primus_high_final.wmv

The gas category winner was just cheesy, so I won't be posting a link to it here.

The other one that stood out in my mind was the one below. It brings new meaning to the word "Field Repair".
http://vids.flyingcirkus.com/vids6/2005csvc/aerofundan-csvc05daniel.wmv

The link to all the entered videos is here (not sure if you need a flying cirkus account to access them):

I posted this for RCGroups mostly, but it’ll fit here too… I did some editing of the video that Dave Rees shot of my Stevens Aero Edge 540 last Saturday at ORCC. You can find it here:

www.engsoc.org/~thastie/Edge540.avi

I compressed it with Divx. If you don’t have the codec installed, you can get it at www.divx.com or here:

www.engsoc.org/~thastie/DivXPlay.exe

This plane just loves to tumble. And for a plane that tumbles, it also tracks really well… Like the Groove, it flies much bigger than it is, and much more honestly than most 50” wingspan planes.

Enjoy,
Tom

Here's some more footage from the ORCC field. It was taken two weeks ago on the day the cubs were visiting.

Steve's patriot, mixed with some cheesy music :D . I believe Mike Torunski was on the sticks at the time, and if I'm not mistaken, Mike may be in negotiation to acquire the aircraft from Steve.

I think I heard that the aircraft has a 0.46FX on the nose. It sure tears across the sky.

www.engsoc.org/~thastie/patriot.avi

Once again, it's in divx, I have the links to the codec in the previous posts.

I think I should start bringing my ancient VHS camcorder to the field more often :D

One more I came across today that I couldn't wait to pass on...

40% Katana S electric powered.

Here's the thread on RCGroups. A video of the aircraft was posted yesterday (see post 35 for the link to the video)

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=377890

Have a look at the battery setup in the first post. Forget the "yule-log" of lipos... this is more like a cinderblock of batteries. Apparently it's powered by 10S12P Thunderpower batteries. From the thunderpower website, I'm guessing that a battery pack to fly this puppy would run you about $2400US (Assuming it's a 2S3P block of 8000mAh 5S4P prolites at $400US a pop). You might want to brush up on your soldering skills before you attach connectors to this pack... wouldn't want to short out a battery and kill the pack :p

The sound of the propeller on this thing is amazing. It's powered by 4 Hacker C50XLs running into a gearbox driving a 32x12 prop. :D

I did some quick math and guesstimated the power system at 6300Watts.
But Gary Wright was saying that my estimate was on the low side and that it'd be closer to 8-10kW. Hmmm... lets see... the average clothes dryer is about 5kW. Lets run two of them in parallel.

I wonder where it will end.

I think we came across the video at the same time. Karel had mentioned it on Sat. and sure enough found it a downloaded it today. Holy   Unbelievable power in an electric. Excellent flying as well.

Will it end?!?............who knows, we've got electric cars now, maybe soon full-scale electric aircraft:p

Cheers,
Dave

Hey Guys.

I'll have to warn you that the following video is pretty graphic.

Shows a very nice 50% Edge 540 owned by Billy Hempel. Has some engine problems during an inverted harrier. He manages to roll out of it in time, and it would have been fine except for a barbed wire fence on the edge of his flying field.

http://www.engsoc.org/~thastie/web16x9edge.wmv

Anyways... next time you're bummed at losing a favourite aircraft... just have a watch. :D

Enjoy,

P.S... not quite as much carnage... but you can see Mike Toner's Choro-Toro (I think that's what he calls it) flying here: http://www.engsoc.org/~thastie/chorotoro.avi

I notice that the Carleton Engineering Server is having some problems today... (danged engineering students)... if you can't get the Edge crash video from my link above, I found another site that is hosting it (all I did was typed the file name into google :D)

Try here:

It's really worth the download.

Time for another installment.

Some more of Bill Hempel's Edge 540 (the one that crashed in the previous video). This time it takes an unsuspecting passenger along for a ride. (I think the neckstrap was a really nice touch).

http://www.engsoc.org/~thastie/bill3.wmv

There's also a video of my SA Groove on my webspace right now that I don't think i've pointed out yet. I had the camera handy, and Dave was taping me doing some zero groundspeed landings on a windy day. :D Rough on the airframe, but tons of fun.

Brace yourself guys (and gals?) this week is a big one. 180megs, but it's about the most entertaining 11mins37seconds involving model airplanes I've found online. Comes from the Bergen Model club in Norway. Seems like their resident camera person strung together a couple months of crash footage into a long carnage video.

Lots of helicopters go down, (couple boom strikes, and a mid-air disintegration), but my favourite is the indoor tomfoolery. Let's just say that these guys (1) haven't read the safety code and (2) keep Mr. Lin at GWS in good business. My favourite has to be the Tigermoth towplane, and when the guy grabs the moth out of the sky and yanks it to the ground.

http://www.engsoc.org/~thastie/crashes_and_stuff_volume_3.mpg

I have volumes 1 and 4 to follow in the coming weeks :D Stay tuned

I'm not so sure that the Norwegians make particularly good pilots...

I've been to this club's field in Bergen...the buildings in the background are a prison that I toured a few years ago as part of my work. Only a couple of glow powered models flying that day. The flying field is pretty good...the problem is that it rains about 300 days per year in Bergen (on the West coast of Norway)...a bummer if you want to do a lot of flying!

John

Tom Hastie

Cool... there's a couple of shots in the other movie of glow models flying in a torrential downpour. You could barely see the model through the small-animal-sized rain drops.

And yes... I agree.... Poor pilots, but great attitude.
