Hi everyone,
I live in Ottawa and just got started in RC Helicopters. I got myself a Blade CP Pro from Discount hobbies. I think its a bit advanced for me but what the hell I have all winter to learn/use the simulator (RealFlight 3.5) and learn to hover in the living room :)
so Far so good. The cost has doubled since the initial purchase but I am able to hover a few inches off the ground for very short amounts of time.
The things I have had to replace:
Rotor blades (a few pairs)
Tail rotor
Tail boom
the thing that holds the rotors (x2)
and the canopy (small crack, no big deal though)
I suppose that is not toooo bad.
I just wanted to come and say Hello to the Ottawa area folks.
Have a great evening.

Hello Luc,
I think you made a good choice as a first heli. I learned to fly helis on a Blade CP with no simulator experience. Note that I also fly rc planes of all kinds so that helps a bit.
I recently purchased an MX400 and finished building it last night. I hovered around in my basement to try and get things dialed in.
This is such a great hobby!
Welcome

I also started heli's with a Blade CP.
Eflite is a little like the corner drug dealer when it comes to the blade. The initial outlay is small, but then they got you by the short'n'curlies with replacement parts.
One suggestion I have is to do your initial practicing outside. It will save you ALOT of crashes when you have open escape routes that are not blocked by couches... walls... family dogs... Wait for calm conditions though. I often fly off my backyard steps just before it gets dark when it's calm.
Other thing you should do if your free is come out to the indoor flying sites. (We're at the Carleton field house on Nov 18th). There'll be a group of E-heli people, and I'm sure a couple of Blades. Be careful though.. you might find yourself buying more helicopters (or planes) if you're not careful.
It's a slippery slope.

I am also new to to helicopters and also have a Blade Pro. I am not yet a member of the club but was wondering if you have to member to fly at Carelton Field house on Nov. 18th. Also where is the Carleton Fieldhouse?

Hi,
I also started this year ( with a blade cp pro ) - hovering is alot easier outside
( when there is no wind) , and also easier when you get a little height as you will not be in your own "blade wash" - this can be a real hassle inside where the air turbulence your heli creates bounces back at your heli from walls, furniture etc. .....
I found that once I got outside it was far easier to dial it in without all of the self caused turbulence...
I too would like to know where the " Carleton Field House " is located.

Hey Sev,
Maybe something for a new thread - which 400 did you build - can you post any pics, with, maybe some specs for what you put in it !?!?!? :)

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the welcome.
I have not tried flying it outside yet because of the crappy Ottawa fall weather :)
I would love to go to the Carleton indoor event on the 18th, even just to chat with Heli owners and maybe get a few pointers.
How do I signup/get more info/who can I contact?
Have a great evening.

The Carleton Field House is located on the Carleton Campus on the Bronson side of things. If you are driving south on Bronson, pass the Sunnyside Entrance to Carleton and look to your right you'll see a giant white building with some abstract art of sports being played on it. If you have Google Earth, I attached a placemark of where the fieldhouse is on Campus. (rename the file to .kmz - Calmdays doesn't like .kmz file types.)
TO fly there, I don't *think* you need to be a member of any club in particular, but you will need to have valid MAAC membership. This can be done quickly over the phone with a Visa card if you like, and I believe they will even fax you the confirmation if you're in a rush.
To rent the facility, the cost is currently $100 per person for 6 3 hour evenings over the course of the winter.
Rob Del Re and Bill Nichols are the organizers of indoor flying this season. If you email me(through Calmdays... the site knows my email address). I can forward you Rob's email, and the information.
Last I heard, there were still pilot slots available.

Hi all,
Just wanted to say hi to everybody. I'm a newbie as well (new to both R/C models and helis in particular) and I'm glad to find this awesome forum.
A friend of mine at work got himself a CP Pro and then - this is the part that got me irrevocably hooked - brought it into the office to play with it. I spent the next week thinking about it, even played with the heli in my X-Plane sim and finally gave up resisting and went to get a CP Pro myself.
That was maybe a month or two ago. Now I'm addicted and enjoying every minute of it. I hope to get a chance to talk to all you wise people at some of the indoor flying meets (I'm sure the pilot slots are full but I'm happy to spectate and chat with people).
Cheers,
Josh

( Hi Josh, welcome )
not to screw up anybodies idea of where this thing is, but I drove by today, and it appears that if you do not turn in to Carleton at Sunnyside you are going to "have" to keep on going, as I did not see another entrance - ( I'm not saying that there may not be one - but I didn't see it ) and this was during the day..... I'm sure at night there will be enough other stuff to watch...............
I went into the campus at Sunnyside and kept to the left at the first corner - I think that after that it is your next left to get into the parking lot ( possibly labelled P5 )....... but you sure can not miss THAT building - it is "HUGE" :)
just f.y.i.

Yup... the Bronson and Sunnyside entrance is the only Entrance to Carleton from Bronson.
Coming south on Bronson, hang a right at Sunnyside, and then just keep making left turns until you get to the Carleton Athletic building parking lot. (I hear a crazy rumour that parking is free on weekends. We'll have to see tonight. )
