Well, I just bought a new spindle ( for a spare ) over the weekend, and true to form, bent it today - so - figured I might as well replace the head assembly while I was at it --

observation: due to frequent blade strikes, the shock seems to work its way down to that little tiny pin that holds the drive gear and shaft on - result - inside the center hub, the pin will "burr" the rotor shaft, which in turn makes it HARD to remove the plastic center hub from the shaft -

I know that there was no burr on this one, cause I installed it about 2 weeks ago -

so, if after you remove the pin, and the center hub won't come off, now you know why............. just pull and turn at the same time...........

( when I replaced the original, I thought that they had "burred" it at the factory, and promptly forgot about it )

"hello LHS" - " I'd like to place my parts order for the week " :D

If you try insert that pin into the shaft before installing it youll see the pin is actually smaller than the hole. So after the first couple flights the torque on that pin burrs the shaft.
A good way to check this is to hold the gear with one hand and twist the head back and forth after installing the new shaft. Youll see it wiggles a bit on there.
I tossed that shearpin because untrue to its name mine has never sheared off before, and replaced it with piano wire. You have to twist it to get it in there but it fights real tight and no more wobble on the head. Im just guessing here but I think this is the cause of some of the yo yoing you get now and then.

Hey,

you're right - I just checked with some unopened spares that I have - I also didn't realize that that pin was supposed to shear (good luck :) ) ......

where is the piano wire from ? next time that I rip the head down, I will try
that ! ( specific size ? )

I buy mine at Dynamic Hobbies but Im sure both shops carry it. As for the size Im not exactally sure. I just had a bunch of bits and pieces in the drawer and found one that fit. Just take a shaft with you when you go there next and match it up.
I couldnt find a piece here to fit exact but I found one a tiny bit larger than the shaft hole, the shaft is just soft enough so that you can twist a piece through there without damaging or weakening the shaft. It goes through the plastic head a lot easier. Just twist it through the shaft to get the size right before installing the head.Easier that way.
Also if you cut the piano wire at 45 degree angle with sidecutters it acts just like a drill bit and will twist its way in a lot easier.

I dont know why they call it a shear pin because theres no way it could produce enough force to shear it off anyway. More like a retaining pin. A shear pin is made to "shear" in the event of a sudden impact or force like the shear pin in a boat propellor. Not like it matters what its called. Im a bit anal sometimes lol

Went out there today, and picked up some wire .... for next time.....

according to the rumours, they are gonna have a very interesting piece (pieces) of hardware coming in this friday - warm up your charge card, may be pricey - the word bling comes to mind.................................. :D

lol Stop teasing. How much is it?? I actually just checked Horizon Hobby under new releases and I seen it there. Its made by Microheli but it doesnt say direct drop in or no mods needed or if it works with the stock shaft or anything. Horizon is just the distributor but Im thinking it must be good for them to sell it. Maybe Fred should consider using my heli as a test subject. Id hate for someone to be flying that and have it blow apart and hurt someone lol

He couldn't give me a price - I guess the paper work wasn't handy when I was there - I believe that there is just one coming in a the moment, probably to see how it goes - outside of that I know nothing else about it - I guess the "interested" will have to draw straws ( ha ) - I have a feeling that he will have no problem moving them :) - like you say - it will be interesting to see how "plug and play" it is ..

I like your idea of a "test" heli - now where did I put that helmet
