View Full Version : Talk about rolls!

All you Flying Giants guys check this one out. This kid is flying a Funtana .40 and his rolls make Mark Leesburg's look slow. Must be something wrong with my Funtana cuz it sure won't do that!

My funtana wouldn't roll like that either, until I replaced the aileron S3004 servos with HS645s. The extra torque REALLY brought the aircraft to life.
After I upped the aileron servos, my Funtana WOULD roll like that, the only problem being that I couldn't control the roll. The difference was really amazing... I think the people who were with me on the flight line heard a couple expletives uttered when I first tested them out.
But nice flying... although... I do notice that he's really only harrier-rolling to the left...

Although, thinking about it, I'm not sure this guy quite beats the harrier rolls Mark Leseberg does with the showtime.

Download the "Harrier Rollin'" video... infact, download them all if you're interested in tips to clean up your flying.
The amazing part is that you can tell Leseberg is in control of the Showtime when it's rolling at 720 degrees/second.
Also, in the "point Rollin'" video, notice how in every one of Marks rolls, the rudder gets used. Even the Fast Aileron Rolls, the rudder gets used to maintain altitude through the 90 degree point.
Once again, we should ask ourselves. How come the Showtime we see flying at the ORCC doesn't fly like this one.
Come to think of it. The Showtime you see in the flyinggiants video has some flat thingies sticking out of the wings about halfway out. It's wierd that the Showtime flying at the ORCC didn't seem to come with those.

OK Tom, I'm glad to see that you missed the sarcasm in my remark about my Funtana performing like that. The fact is that there is nothing wrong with my plane... it is the pilot who is lacking. I imagine the plane would roll something like that if I had the skill to make it do so. How those guys manage to get their thumbs to keep up at those high roll rates is beyond me.
You are right about servos though... I use standard servos for the ailerons on the Funtana and it rolls ok (fasterr than last year since I now have expo and can use larger throws). But I have digitals on the Tantrum and even though the ailerons are a bit smaller than the Funtanas, roll rate is at least as fast and the entries and exits can be very abrupt. I still tend to overshoot my snap rolls because of the unexpectedly high roll rate. Rolling harriers are really fast.
Regarding that Showtime at the ORCC field, maybe the reason it doesn't fly like Leesberg's is because it doesn't use those wing thingies. There Dave... now you have an excuse. Just make sure you change the subject when people ask you why you don't use them. Or you could tell them that they are just a crutch for sissies... something that good pilots don't need.

Hey Andre. Yes, I think you need to be a member of flying giants to access that link. If you are not a member I highly recommend you become one... the site is awesome with new videos of 3D flying (from foamies to giant scale) posted daily. As I recall, registering only takes a minute and basically just requires your name and maybe an email address.
go for it!

I second that. Flying Giants is a great site with lots of good material. My top three bookmarks are CalmDays, RCGroups and FlyingGiants, with FlyingCirkus a close fourth.
