The Cap 580 is nearly ready to go, just a few more things to tidy up, and the cowling has to be mounted. If all goes according to plan, the maiden flight will be this weekend. Cameras ready!

By the way, did you know that they use fumes from CA glue to get fingerprints from non-porous surfaces, such as the inside of a model airplane canopy? Here's how to do it. 1) As you are trimming the excess plastic from the formed canopy that comes with the kit, allow your fingers to touch the inside of the canopy. 2) Next, using windex and a soft cloth, carefully clean the inside of the canopy so that it looks nice and pretty . 3) Glue the canopy onto the model with CA. Be careful that the CA does not run all over the place. 4) Admire how nice it looks with the scale figure of Matt Chapman under the nice clear canopy. Set the fuselage aside and go work on something else for a while. 5) When you come back some time later, presto! Your finger prints, along with the streaks of the windex which were previously invisible, have magically re-appeared on the inside of the canopy, as the CA fumes react with the traces of residues from your fingers and whatever else. Now you can photograph the fingerprints, flip them to get the mirror image, and identify the owner. Just like how the professionals do it in crime scene investigation.

If you remove the Canopy you may be able to remove the prints with a dab of Acidtone!

I had some spilled Ca on the tail of Capt Eddie and the acid tone work great using a Q-tip!

Your Cap pic would make a good Avitar for you eh! - Do it before Ardre Blais does LOL!

Axel Foley used said trick when he was a cop in Beverly Hills. I believe it was the second movie where he did it (it was on CityTV last week).

*hums catchy 80's techno tune*

Hey Mike...... I think that is why they sell "Canopy Glue"!! It's what I use and no finger prints!!!!;)

Yep, I've seen the advertisements for the special canopy glue, but I decided to put the money towards buying lipos instead. Looks like I was penny wise and pound foolish. The only up-side is that it won't affect the flight performance (I hope) :)

It has become obvious to me why you guys like these airplanes so much. It's a hoot! I left the cowling off for the first flight, intending to mount it after I got used to the way it handles. But the machine was so smooth, I need not have been worried about breaking the cowling. You can put it in nearly any attitude, and if you neutalize the controls, it just tracks pretty much straight and true.

I can hardly wait for next weekend! :o

Congrats Mike...

Those of you who weren't there to witness Mike's maiden voyage of a wooden plane, it was darn near text book... I might even say "boring" to watch ;) ;)

Landing was silky smooth even with a strong headwind.

Let me tell you.... Mike was grinning from ear to ear... almost jumping up and down. I'd have to say I think he likes the plane.

Next order of business is to see how it feels when you turn it upside-down.

Way to go Mike! Sorry I wasn't there to film it for you. We'll have fun in the mornings this summer seeing who can push the envelope the farthest!

Congrats again!

Congrats on the maiden Mike, er, balsa-Mike.

You could've done me a favoer though and picked a time with less air-traffic. I didn't know what to watch as there were three planes in the air that I'd never seen fly. My friend with the camera only managed to take one pic of the Cap on final.

Cheers,
Dave

... were three planes in the air ....

** Three** airplanes??!! I thought there was only *two* airplanes - the Cap and Corey's ducted-fan machine. (Way cool by the way, Corey) Which one was the other one?

hhhmmm, not sure why I haven't responded before now. I'm pretty sure that Sev's Irish Orville was also in the air.

Cheers,
Dave

Today (Sat 18th) there was no trouble with congested airspace. I was there from 10:30-12:00 and was all alone. Bit cold and windy however. Got in another flight on the Cap, this time on wheels. Man does that puppy like to move. The OS61 is waaaay too much power for this model, but that does make it fun.

BTW Dave tell your friend thanks for the picture. It looks good as my avatar ;)

I too went out Sat - 1:30pm for a very short flight! - Its very cold :(
I wanted to test fly the EX- Dave-Penchuk - Sig Wonder that I had purchased at the auction. AKA - Blue Angle cover scheme!

The little ASP .15 started up fine - easily tuned - and away it went - only needed a few clicks of aileron to fly's hands off. Nice plane zips along very smoothly almost boring to fly. I'll have to increase throws and I may slap in a.20 FP for fun!

I went out today as well... from 9 to 10:25am. I got 3 more flights on the lucky Orville. I was freezing and decided to leave. Then as I start driving up Moodie... I see Mike going to the field. I almost turned around to get a few more flights and see Mike's Cap fly again but the heat from the car was just too good to miss.
Mike... Did you by any chance leave a Swiss Army knife at the field when you maidened the Cap?
If so... I picked it up.

Ah, so some people were at the field, except that we were there at different times. Maybe tomorrow will be better.

Nope, I've never owned a swiss knife. Trying to think who else was there. Sev, Corey, Dave, Tom and Dave's friend. Didn't I see Corey with a knife like that?

I do carry one, but mine's white, and accounted for. Must be someone elses.

Hey... the knife's mine I think.

I've been missing mine for a couple weeks now, and I've been through a couple laundry cycles so I know it's not in my OTHER jeans (which is where it usually turns up).

I woulda been using it to bolt the wings on my Groove/Orville that day... I might have left it on the picnic table.

I bet it has the toothpick, but is missing the tweezers, right?

That's right Tom. Toothpick but no tweezers. I'll keep it in the car so next time you see me at the field... ask me for it.
