I am starting to get some feed back from other modelers who have purchased the Orville and it great to hear! So it looks like we should have a bunch of them flying around at the Dynamic Hobbies SMALL event Saturday 22 July 2006. Wich of course is sponsored by the ORCC!
Orville has arrived!!
Wow, ordered on Monday and got it by Wednesday, regular post
A Canadian Plane by a Canadian Designer and Distributed by a Canadian company. The laser cutting is most excellent, well worth the $75 cdn.
It's on the board for March...... hopefully
Bob
Bob Lives in Ajax and is planing to attend SMALL 2006 for the first time.
So for me this was the whole idea of a build project is getting more participation from near and far!

I started building my Orville last night. I just couldn't stop. Turned around to look at the clock and it was 2:30am. I thought to myself...If I didn't have to work tomorrow i'd build thru the night.
I worked from 7pm to 2:30am and got the tail feathers and the fuselage completed (minus the top and bottom sheeting on the fuselage).
I must say that the laser cutting is excellent. Everything fits like a glove!
Great work Ken!

Your model looks great, Tom! ...And you sure are getting it done quickly.
...Looks like you'll definitely have it ready for the Winter Fun Fly (or earlier).

Ran up the Orville last night for the first time with everything on board and the Hacker A30-16M up front. Feels like its a very good match for the airframe for agressive sport flying. Judging by the pull out of my hand the motor will hover it with moderate pull out :D
Too many minor details to get finished to have it ready for tomorrow :( Hatches... securing wires... skis... etc. Definitely for next weekend though!

But will it hover...

The airframe is completed and my transparent green covering material is due to arrive on Friday. I should have it covered in a week from Friday and then finishing will happen in the week following.
I'll probably maiden either the weekend before or at the fun fly.

I picked up my transparent green and white covering material at lunch today. Everything is on schedule for finishing next week.

I made up some skis last night. All that remains is to add some rigging to keep them from rotating with the wheel in flight. I'll do that tomorrow morning as soon as I can roll myself out of bed, and plan to head out to the field late morning/lunch tomorrow for the maiden.

Well.. I thought I'd update everyone on my green machine Orville build. Last night I covered the fuselage. I think it came out very well.
All that's left to do is finish covering the wing (tomorrow night), do the graphics (Wednesday), sit the pilot in his cockpit (a secret for now), and install all the hardware. Hopefully I'll get my HS-81 servos this week and maiden at the Stetson's Fun Fly.

Holly #$%@ Sev! that looks GREAT! - Ok I guess I'll have to take 2nd place in the upcomming 2006 Concourse best covering event! Looking good Sev!
The clear green is so cool looking!
Note: All the checker-board squares are 1" size - the wing Pin-strips are outside 1/4" and 1/8" inside.
Secret Pilot? hmmm Kermit the frog?
Sev Fontaine

Close Ken... Kermit was actually the second runner up. Third runner up was Slimer from the ghostbusters and fourth runner up was the Incredible Hulk.
The winner will remain a secret for now.

Peter Richards who runs the laser cut site that burns the Orville kits tells me he's working on getting spoked wheels in as a new product!
Called "Sport Spokes" 3inch wheel with 1/8" hubs made of plywood rims and spokes made of thread. Tires are O rings. These are kits that you assemble in a supplied jig!
The wheels will be avail in various sizes but the 3" ones are exactly what is listed for the Orville!
I told Richard to put me on a list for a set!

Looks like there will be a squadron of Orville's flying this week-end!
You guys will have to put on a show doing some formation flying for us. :D

Yup its that sad - seeing 3 F-18's together is considered a Squadron of planes in the Cdn Force these days. 3 Orvilles is merely a "FLOCK!"
By July 2006 there may be more active flying Orvilles than we have active F-18s. LOL
Hey we better keep them Orvilles seperated at the fun/fly - they breed like rabbitt's when your not looking. Rumor has it that there are at least 2 more in the Ottawa area.

I was looking at the forecast for the funfly weekend and we may need to sacrifice some Orvilles to the RC gods to ensure beautiful weather ;). Looks like you have a runaway hit here Ken.
Sev Fontaine
02-21-2006, 06:46 PM
I will not sacrifice my Orville. :) I took it out this morning and had my maiden flight. All I can say is I love this plane!
Since the RC gods were probably mad at me for giving my intention to maiden at the fun fly I decided to get it out of the way. This way now the RC gods should give us nice clear skies and a "Calm Day".

Hi Mike!
Feel free to get in on the basement floor of people who have purchased the Orville! The model has only been on the market since Jan. If you buy one your sure to be the first US customer we've had!
Tom Hastie did a build-thread on RC-Groups http://www.rcgroups.com
under Electric Sport planes page.
Keep an eye out for it to be mentioned in a few of the big RC-magazines in the next few months.

Glad to hear the wee green guy Shamrocks and all got airborne and all went well. But you already knew it would fly great before you took off! I sure that was the most relaxed you ever been on a maiden flight!
How well did your .25 OS FP work? I know its not as hot as the newer FX series.
Iam looking forward to getting some photo's this weekend! I think a group photo of the 3 ameigo's and their Orville's is a must!

Congrats on the maiden Sev!! You're Orville looks great. Can't wait to see the three of them together. A photo of the three will be a great way to test the colour convergence of my monitor :D So, how long did it take to cut out all those shamrocks?
Cheers,
Dave

Ken: The .25 OS FP worked like a charm. The only thing I needed to change was the prop size. I was running an 8x4 but I definitely needed something larger so on my way home I picked up a 9x5. We'll see how it goes on the weekend.
Dave: I was just about to start building a punch to make those shamrocks when my girlfriend suggested I just buy stickers. I found these at the dollar store. I bought a whole bunch of extras as replacements if they fall off.

Note too Sev! - Keep the girlfriend she's smarter than the rest of us all put together! - Dollar Store! Doah! that would of never crossed my mind!
I am going to drop into ToyRus after work! - I need to find somthing Blue for the cockpit!
You may find the APC props pull a bit better on the FP - Higher nitro 10-15% may help performance also. Go Synthedic green! cause you won't be able to tell where the slime is! LOL!
PS: Sev I would like to hear if you've had any contact with Dean of FRCC

Thanks for the tip Ken. If this 9x5 master airscrew prop doesn't work too well... i'll try an APC.
I've been running this little power plant on 10% Green since the day I got it. This engine had been stored for at least 4 to 5 years. It was running pretty poorly in my Liberator but it finally cleared up. I think the problem was carbon build up and I heard synthetic fuel is great for cleaning that up.

Well I went out after work on a mission to find a pilot with character for my blue Orville! I went to a local Barhaven toy store called " Toys of Fire" This store mainly carried action figures based on all the Movies , TV shows ie "Family guy" Simpsons etc etc.
The pilot I found is indeed Blue!, roundish and is known only for TV ads! any guesses?
The pilot is now stuffed into the cockpit and made my wife Deborah laugh out loud when she saw it!
Some of the toys seen are strickly adult. Anyone want figuarines of the Family guy and his wife dressed up in leather as seen in the bedroom scenes from the TV show. I saw that show - "The saftey word is Banana!" -

Is there any Demand locally in Ottawa for more Orville kits?
If I did a bulk buy of 3-4 kits the cost of shipping would much lower for those 3-4 kits. And they could pick them up from me.
Please give me an email/PM on Calmdays if your up for this! If I get min 2 people I'll go ahead with the order!
