Here we go!... This has to be one of the best heli crashes I've seen... EVER!
Possible captions that come to mind are:
"It's the garden weasel... easily aerate and loosen soil... all from the comfort of your lawn chair"
... or....
"Always remember which switch is the Idle-Down."
Anyways... I think this Raptor 90 (I think?) has had it.

OMG, way to close to the chopper. If he had followed through with that last flip it would have given him a haircut. The spectator/camerman should also not be out to the side. I also like the running up to the heli while it is still thrashing.

Seriously... These guys were almost in the running for some Darwin Awards.
I was also kinda wondering what he was expecting to do after he ran up to that thrashing heli...
I love the cameraman's commentary after things go silent... I think I picked up some new words in German!

oooh... thrashed... it looked like he was going to try to stop it... until it came towards him...

Brutal...how about shutting down the engine with throttle trim...

Doesn't look like he had any throttle control. It is not uncommon for the throttle linkage to pop off in a crash and have the heli do the dance of death. Yet another reason to have throttle hold set up on your radio and hit it if you are in irrecoverable trouble.
Tom Hastie

Yeah... I think I read in the english thread that linked to this video that the crash either knocked the throttle servo out, or broke the linkage. I think he eventually shuts down the heli by manually grabbing the throttle linkage (you can hear him push the linkage the wrong way when the engine screams up to full throttle).

Testing... 1... 2... 3... Can anybody hear me? Dave S. here. This is my first attempt to repond to a thread. Am I supposed to use the quick reply? I thoroughly enjoyed the heli crash... I'm slightly ashamed to say I get a morbid sense of amusement watching other peoples' model aircraft crash... and the more spectacular, the better. Although I've noticed the amusement level goes down considerably when it is my own plane that is involved (which is all too often the case) Anyway, it was humorous watching little peices go flying off in all directions as that helicopter did its roto-tiller imitation. Now I understand what "auto-rotation" means. Makes me glad I only fly fixed wing. As we all know, they are perfectly safe!

HA! Auto-Rotation... that's good... wish I had thought of it...
Yup... your response attempt was heard and received. Welcome aboard.
When can I fly your Funtana wannabe for ya? :D

Brother of Funtana will be ready to go as soon as the runway is clear of snow. If that was an offer to test fly it, I accpt.

Well it's been too long since I posted something here. Scanned my hard drive for something different and interesting, and found this. This is a friend of mine from when I was a member at the Winnipeg Headingly AeroModelers just outside Winnipeg. Dennis Ward always had something giant scale and interesting on the go. This is his 20ft Hercules on it's maiden flight.

A couple of build pictures to give you and idea of the size of this puppy can be seen here:

Now that's big.

yeah... that must've taken forever to build. Great detail on that model. This almost reminds me of the pink floyd project. Except this is an actual scale model. Does anyone know what the record is for the largest remote control model flown? That'd be interesting to know...

That's amazing! ...I didn't realize until after viewing the video that it was such a big airplane! ...I thought it was powered by .25s or something... ;)
He flew it on the maiden as if he'd been flying it for years...

Found a good video this week on RCGroups. Fellow from the Utah Flyers did some testing on Lipos and videoed the resulting carnage. This is one of the better videos I've seen so far showing the "vent with flame" occurence.
http://www.utahflyers.org/
The video in question can be seen here:
http://www.utahflyers.org/movies/Lipofires.wmv
The video shows what happens when a 2S 1200mAh battery is left on charge at 10amps. (For the non electric flyers, 2-cell 1200mAh isn't all that big. It'd fly a small parkflyer or foamy indoor flyer). Granted this isn't something you should do on purpose, but as far as I've read the same can occur if a 2-cell is charged as a 3 cell, or if you accidentally activate Nimh or NiCD mode on your multifunction charger. Always check cell count, and be careful when using "All-in-one" chargers.

10 amps whhhaaaa.
The battery didn't have a chance. Try NiCad or NMH at 10 C charge I think you can get the same affects, at least lots of heat.
I would like to see it as normal charge gone bad i.e.:
Charged 2 cell as a 3 cell @1C,
Charged normal @2C.
Or maybe 1c as a NiCad.
Or cell shorted.
I think these tests would be more useful to know how dangerous these cells really are. My charger only does 1 amp. will 1 amp blow it this good ?
Minor mistakes how bad will we pay, the same as 10c ? house, car, life.
Glow fuel can light up pretty quick so we don't throw it in the fire.
I know these are very dangerous if charged or handled improperly. I would like to know how careful you really have to be.
Making people very afraid of these cells will not help.(other than to make them be very carefull), it will also stop a lot of people from trying them.
I definitely won't try 10c as a 3 cell into 2 cells.LOL

Woah... man... I'd hate to see what my 3C would look like exploding... geeze... a good video though... I've learned my lesson just from watching that... I'll have to be careful charging... but I do find it funny that I was listening to 'feels like fire' while I was watching the video. :)

Here's a little something to get us into the spirit for the Algonquin Dome on Friday night.
Some video courtesy of flyinggiants.com of the recent Great Planes E-fest in Champagne Ill.
Watching some of the freestyle routines, it seems that variable pitch props are taking over on this side of the atlantic too.
If you watch NOTHING else in this video, fastforward to about 2:45 and watch the NOSE touch that the guy does with the foamy. Now THAT is something freaky to see.
The link is here:

I'm hoping you can rightclick and "save as" without having to sign into the flying giants website.

Very cool, "Balsa Mike"...you don't get a decent perspective on just how big the B-29 is until the very last shot...it's huge...

YIKES!!! ...That's nuts!
...Should give you lots of ideas about how to expand your "flight envelope", eh? ...But you'll need one of those reversing-pitch prop mechanisms of whatever it is...

Came across something that was worth resurecting this thread over.
I'm surprised they haven't outlawed those looping styrofoam gliders yet.
Warning: Some of the events depicted in this video may not meet the MAAC safety code. View at your own risk.

Pretty "funny" (some looked like valuable models going bye-bye) Plus, lots of those foam gliders (I remember I had one when I was a kid). I liked the shot of the guy who trips over the model after it hit him on the shins...:p

Well the videos from the ETOC two weeks ago are beginning to surface. For those of you who are out of the loop, this is the Electric-Tournament of Champions. It's an indoor, flat foamy aerobatic competition. Jason Noll won it this year. There's a bit of a hullabaloo going around as some people were disappointed with his "winning" freestyle routine. It seems the final scores were a combination of the pattern flights and the freestyle flights. Jason Noll was so far ahead of the pack after the pattern routine, that he could be a little more cautious in the freestyle.
Anyways... Here are a couple that came up in the RCGroups thread here: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=505666
Benoit - seems to be the crowd favourite. I especially like the take-off he does:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5342601&postcount=25
Devin McGrath - another crowd favourite. I didn't know a foamy could roll that fast:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5342123&postcount=21
In the RCGroups forum you can also find videos of Jason Noll, Quique Somenzini, and Ryan Archer(12 years old, placed 6th out of 12!!!).
Also, here's Mark Lesseberg's Freestyle. He actually didn't make it to the freestyle round after apparently flying into a baseketball net during the Pattern round. If you watch to the end you see him switch to a one handed rolling harrier, and then turn around and wave to the audience with the plane continuing to rolling harrier behind him. I guess what they say about rolling harriers being JUST rhythm is true.

I might add some more videos as other people post their footage online. (and I have time at home to filter for ya).

I'm here I'm here! Still alive... I was flying at ORCC Monday morning... alone with Balsa Mike... Where the heck were YOU guys???? huh? HUH?
I've just been busy here at work, and it's seriously cramped my posting style. I manage to get the odd post in on RCGroups, but on here, there's generally not enough animated discussion serve as foddger for snide comments from me... ya know?
That turbine YAK is awesome. I wonder how good the throttle response is. From pictures I've seen with the cowling off, It looks like it's a free turbine style turboprop (meaning that the power take-off for the propeller is essentially just a windmill sitting in the hot jet blast from the main turbine). In full scale aircraft you a) don't care as much about instant pickup, and b) have variable pitch propellers to help out. I kinda doubt he's using a variable pitch propeller, so I bet it would take an eternity for the motor to spool up if he gets out of position and has to abandon a hover quickly.
Although, I guess QQ never gets out of position and needs reserve power to correct his maneuvers :P

Same flight... slightly poorer encoding, but no music... You can really hear the whine of the turbine :)

Hey John, Don't let this happen to your Laser.
http://media.putfile.com/Laser-200-bit-by-flutter-bug
Remember... that channel Number 3 is ALSO a proportional channel. There is such a thing as reducing throttle partways during flight :)
When is your laser gonna be flight ready anyways? You should go for a maiden at Arnprior sometime :) I wonder if it'll hover.

Ouch time!
Bummer...looks like the tail let go. What a sound when a 20 pound plane hits the ground, eh? :( The Laser's tail is just balsa sticks with some bracing wires. ...Mine is made from hard balsa...hope it will hold.
I think you mean my Stinger. The Laser I have is from Mark Winstanley (although I do have a half built one myself). I will wait for the grass...and start breaking in the ST4500 during the month of June.
