Here is a guy who took leave from his day job and built an airplane with solar cells, lipos, a custom ESC and optimized brushless motor. They quote 90% efficiency at 10% load with this motor and drive. It was a 9-phase drive.

They did their test from a small trailer in the Califronia desert. One thing I liked about the telemetry they had was the camera with the "cockpit view" from the airplane.
